Spirit of the Eagle – June 2013

Rector’s Reflections
When I was young, summer always began Memorial Day weekend because school ended just before it, and ended Labor Day weekend. Nowadays school often ends well after Memorial Day and begins long before Labor Day. That is a shame really, we need that time to rest and relax from our normal activities and to bask in the warm weather and enjoy the wonders of God’s creation. I know I am looking forward to my vacation as I am sure many of you are. web speed The thing we must remember though is that the Church continues to operate week after week, through summer, fall, winter, and spring. And to do so it needs our participation and support to continue. Your presence and financial support through these lazy days of summer is highly appreciated by your Vestry and all our Clergy, and most especially by myself. Have a great and Happy Summer!
+++Yours-In-Christ, Fr. Bryan Newman+++

Wednesday Night Service Hiatus
Last year the Wednesday night Holy Communion service went on hiatus when the Choir did the same for six weeks in the summer. This year we will be doing the same as the Choir will begin its summer break from practice beginning the first week of July and returning the 3rd week of August. Thanks to all those who have been making the effort to attend Wednesday services as attendance has been good lately and please continue to attend through our last service on June 26th as we celebrate the Feast of St. Peter the Apostle.

St. John’s Dad’s Day
Please come to the Parish Hall, on Sunday, June 23rd as the Anglican Church Women celebrate Father’s Day by providing lunch for the Fathers of our parish. We are doing it a week after the normal celebration of Father’s Day so as not to conflict with family celebrations. But we believe we must recognize the Fathers of this Church and their great efforts and sacrifices for their parish family. HAPPY DAD’S DAY!!!

St. John’s 140th Anniversary
St. John’s 140th Anniversary was Monday, May 27th! During the 1870’s Anglicans in Dayton/Bellevue had to walk or travel by horse to St. Paul’s in Newport. In those days it was arduous trip on dirt roads. A mission was established first and finally on May 27th, 1873 St. John the Evangelist was granted Parish status. An empty lot was purchased by the end of that year on Mckinney Street for construction our first Church building. Fr. Newman and the Vestry will decide the day we celebrate our 140th Anniversary @ June’s Vestry meeting. We will make sure that it is an event worthy of the occasion.

Fr. Neuroth’s 30th Anniversary
Please join us on Sunday, June 2nd as we celebrate Fr. William Neuroth’s 30th anniversary of being with St. John’s. His long tenure here as Rector has seen many great events and played a major part in all our lives. Join us on the 2nd, after Holy Mass for a Coffee Hour when we will recognize and recall his great contributions to our Parish of St. domain intelliegence John’s. Congratulations Fr. Bill!

Fr. Neuroth’s 48th Ordination Anniversary
Please join us Wednesday June 5th @ 6 pm for a special Mass which Fr. William Neuroth will celebrate in honor of the 48th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood! Please come and recognize Fr. Neuroth’s long service to the Church in general, and St. John’s in particular, as well as the great impact his ordination has had on the communities in Northern Kentucky! Congratulations Fr. Bill!

Spiritual Tidbits for June from Father Tim
“Christ is lost, like the pieces of money in the parable; but where? In thy house, that is, in thy soul. Thou needest not run to Rome or Jerusalem to seek Him. He sleepeth in thy heart, as He did in the ship; awaken Him with the loud cry of thy desire. Howbeit, I believe that thou sleepest oftener to Him than He to thee.” Put away “distracting noises,” and thou wilt hear Him. First, however, find the image of sin, which thou bearest about with thee. It is no bodily thing, no real thing – only a lack of light and love. It is a false, inordinate love of thyself, from whence flow all deadly sins. (Walter Hilton 1340-96, English Augustinian Mystic – The Scale of Perfection)

Summer is right around the corner! Summer happenings can really busy up our schedule and have us running to and fro, but we must always find time away from “distracting noises” to seek Him. Taking time to find Christ every day of the week will keep our schedules from overwhelming us and thus limit those times of unexpected crisis. All of us are susceptible if we forget to awaken Christ with a daily loud cry (our family had one of these surprise crisis over the Memorial Day holiday). Without Christ we will quickly find ourselves without light and love. I hope and pray that your summer is full of sun light and Son shine. ~ Father Tim

June Spirituality Class
Please join us on the 9th of June when we begin our discussion of the Lord’s Prayer using the book Abba and the seven phrases of our Lord’s Prayer as a means to propel the self toward union with God.“Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you.” “The Saints,” says St. Teresa in The Way of Perfection, “rejoiced at injuries and persecutions, because in forgiving them they had something to offer God.” Evelyn Underhill, Abba

Mutual forgiveness of each vice,
These are the gates of Paradise.

I hope to see you in the Spirituality Class this June! Bring a friend! ~Father Tim

Women’s Retreat in July
Please continue to prepare for the Women’s Retreat on the 20th of July at the home of Judy Hulsey. We will spend approximately 5 hours praying, reading, and contemplating the subjects of Love, Joy, and Peace. Devotional material will be provided. Please let Judy or myself know if you are planning to attend so preparations can be made. And don’t forget, bring a neighbor! This is the perfect opportunity to introduce a friend (who may be intimidated by a formal church service) to our church family and bring them into a closer relationship with God. ~Father Tim

JulianNorwich2“After this our Lord showed concerning Prayers. In which showing I see two conditions signified by our Lord; one is rightfulness, another is assured trust. But oftentimes our trust is not full; for we are not sure that God heareth us, as we think because of our unworthiness, and because we feel right nought; for we are as barren and dry oftentimes after our prayers as before…. But our Lord said to me, ‘I am the ground [cause] of thy beseechings: first, it is My will that thou have it; and then I make thee to wish for it; and then I make thee to beseech it, and thou beseechest it. How then should it be that thou shouldest not have thy beseeching?’… For it is most impossible that we should beseech mercy and grace and not have it. For all things that our good Lord maketh us to beseech, Himself hath ordained them to us from without beginning. Here may we see that our beseeching is not the cause of God’s goodness; and that showed He soothfastly in all these sweet words which He saith: ‘I am the ground.’ And our good Lord willeth that this be known of His lovers in earth; and the more that we know it the more should we beseech, if it be wisely taken; and so is our Lord’s meaning. Merry and joyous is our Lord of our prayer, and He looketh for it; and He willeth to have it; because with His grace He would have us like to Himself in condition as we are in kind. Therefore saith He to us, ‘Pray inwardly, although thou think it has no savour to thee: for it is profitable, though thou feel not, though thou see not, though thou think thou canst not.’” (Julian of Norwich 1342 – 1416, English Christian mystic – Revelations of Divine Love)

Pray! ~Father Tim

Anglican Church Women
A retreat for the women of the parish will be held on Saturday, July 20th from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Judy Hulsey’s home. We would like to thank Judy for sharing her beautiful home with us. Father Butler and Janet have graciously offered to prepare devotionals and readings for the day to assist us on our spiritual journey. All women are urged to attend and they may also invite some special women in their life to join in on this day of prayer, reflection and companionship.

Looking ahead to summer, the ACW will be hosting a Father’s Day Luncheon for the men and fathers of our parish on Sunday, June 23rd, a week after Father’s Day. Thank you to all who participate and support the ACW.

End of Month Club
For the next few months, EOM will meet in the evening for dinner. This will allow our interested Parishioners to join in our fellowship. We will be dining at Walt’s Hitching Post at the corner of Kyles Lane and Madison Pike. We will need to have reservations, as the restaurant has recently reopened and demand is high to dine here. So, you must call Fr. Al or Kathy Hougham at 859-331-2951 so we can give the restaurant a reservation number. Without a reservation, some prospective diners have been told they would have a three hour wait to be seated!

Mark your calendars for Thursday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. and call the Houghams to reserve your “seat at the table.” Also, do call if you need a ride or better directions. We look forward to a good turnout for this fellowship.

Jr. Warden’s Report
With the exception of an air conditioning scare (both circuit breakers somehow were flipped to the off position), all is good in St. Johnville. I’m hoping to make a motion at our next Vestry meeting that the money made from our City Wide Yard Sale on August 10 will go toward replacing at least one of the old aluminum windows in the Church basement. You may bring your yard sale items to the open area of the furnace room.

Please remember to take all of your items such as bulletins, newsletters and used tissues in the trash or home with you as you are leaving Church each Sunday.

Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.” Newt Gingrich
Until next month………Mike
